Celebes Explorer 9

The 35-foot (116-meter) Celebes Explorer is the only liveaboard taking divers to Sipadan Island. She has permits to carry up to 16 guests to some of this region's most spectacular diving.

A word from Dom … “The Celebes Explorer 9 launched in 2019, replacing an older vessel which didn’t get great reviews. While the new boat is still not a luxury liveaboard, it has lots of space & gets divers where they want to go. The stunning resorts in the Sipadan / Mabul region cannot (due to permit allocations) provide as many Sipadan dives as the Explorer can. So, weigh your choices well. Great Diving ... Plenty Of Room To Relax

The sun deck, on the top of the vessel, offers lounge chairs for catching those all-important rays. But, you’ll also find comfy loungers located under cover at the stern on the upper deck, just downstairs from the sun deck. Also at this level is a very nice little interior, air-conditioned lounge with deep sofas, a TV and mini-bar. On the main deck, is the larger interior lounge where you’ll find a library & some board games.

This large lounge area has a big buffet table in the center and serves as the dining room, with restaurant-style seating. The main deck also houses two of the cabins and the remaining 6 cabins are on the lower deck.

Food is simple, but good, and largely Asian-style cuisine. As mentioned earlier, it is served buffet style.

Itineraries

Celebes Explorer offers 3, 4 and 7-night itineraries to Sipadan Island. On 7-night trips you will dive Sipadan every day with the excepton of the first and last day.

A coral island on top of an extinct volcano, Sipadan is graced with steep drop-offs which form a 600 meter wall. The corals are world-class & with the drop-offs, which are washed by upwelling currents carrying rich nutrients, you get superb pelagic action at the same site as corals & critters. An astonishing number of Green turtles are resident here and the water is teeming with schools of fascinating bumphead parrotfish, large schools of barracuda and trevally …. grey & whitetip reef sharks, leopard sharks, bamboo sharks, even thresher sharks, white tip sharks, eagle rays, mantas & marble rays. The frosting on the cake, the intriguing scalloped hammerhead!
