Orangutans of Borneo

Indonesia is home to one of the world's most fascinating land animals: the wild Orangutans of Borneo. Hard to spot between the thousands of trees in the rainforest, a houseboat offers the perfect opportunity for wildlife lovers to catch a glimpse of one of the world's most precious wild animals.

Eye to eye with the great Orange Apes

Although we are diving specialists, we don’t go blind for the natural wonders that are still to be found above the surface.

One of the most intimate wildlife experiences we have ever undertaken, is the safari boat along the Sekonyer river through the heart of the rainforest.

Expect to see wild Orangutans, Proboscis monkeys, silver leaved monkey, hawksbill and tons of other birds species, both from the comfort of a luxurious boat and in the wild during trekkings.

The key element here is that usually when visiting a rainforest, you are covered by the layered structure of plants and leaves. The boat tour among the Sekonyer river gives you the unique changes to look into rainforest with a clear and immersive overview.

Our partners in Borneo offer a luxurious houseboat experience typically for 3night/4days itinerary.

Sample Itinerary

We took a 4night/5 day itinerary on a Super Deluxe houseboat, that had the following planning:

Day 1:

Arrival at the tiny harbour at the Sekonyer river, we embarked on the houseboat, got some time to settle in before we took off on a sunset cruise through the rainforest. Dinner and the night hike through the rainforest spotting for snakes, birds, special spiders under the cover of night.

Day 2:

Visit at the rehabilitated orangutan feeding station, hike after through the rainforest. Boat cruise along the Sekonyer to a isolated area where the boat is moored and we watched the sunset sinking down over the forest.

Day 3:

Visit to forest planting local NGO. A short tour of the why and how of the reforestation efforts. After drive along the river to another feeding station for rehabilitated orangutans. After a drive along the river looking for wild orangutans, monkey species and tropical birds.

Day 4:

Rainforest hike looking for wild animals, a traditional guided kayak drive through the high grasses of the rainforest. Afternoon cruise along the rainforest to spot wildlife.

Day 5:

Slow drive out of the rainforest back to civilisation, arrival in the harbour around noon.

The food was all around amazing: typical Indonesian kitchen, all freshly prepared on the boat with tons of variation and serious options. The crew of five on board is making sure to maximise the amount of wildlife encounters and preserve the intimacy of the experience.

This is undoubtedly one of the best on land wildlife experiences Asia has to offer.
