The name conjures up the vision of an infinitely
remote, mysterious & untamed island, imbued with a
history of ancient & primitive tribal customs that
lasted well into the modern era. So, before I
even thought about diving in Papua, I was attracted by
its wild & alluring reputation.
But then, of
course, I dove there . . . and like others before
me, found the seas to be as magical as, no, probably
even more magical than the land.
There's
truly something for everyone. The corals really
are pristine & vibrant; there really are sites
with such a plentitude of pelagics that it makes your
blood boil to swim amongst them; and
there honestly are countless sites which provide macro
photography opportunities that simply cannot be put into
words.
Plus, there is so much space and there
are so few dive boats, that you just won't ever have to
face hundreds of other divers exploring "your"
dive site! Two dive boats at the
same site at the same time is virtually unheard of in
Papua New Guinea. So you really can have the
feeling of being an explorer in a lost region of the
planet while you're finning along in this underwater
wonderland.
On top of which, the boats &
resorts there are ALL first class. So, take

PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Papua New Guinea today offers not only some
of the most desirable diving but also
unquestionably many of the truly finest
boats and resorts to be found anywhere in
the diving world. Making a choice here
is not an easy task. Here's the
overview . . . .
The
FeBrina is
known for some of the best adventure diving
in PNG with fabulous programs
around Kimbe Bay and the Bismark Sea from
Walindi Plantation Resort.
Then in February and March, she goes
to Rabaul for three ten night trips along
the protected South coast of New Britain.
You can be assured that your trip here will
encompass real exploration and adventure.
The
Star Dancer
which is part owned by Peter
Hughes,
recently underwent a major half million
dollar refit of her main engines and
mechanics, so now you have a spacious go
anywhere vessel with updated engines, not
unimportant in these remote parts of the
world.
On the
Golden Dawn,
Captain Craig de Witt has long enjoyed a
reputation as one of the top acts in PNG,
and along with his monopoly on trips to the
Eastern Fields, he is now the only
live-aboard that offers re-breathers (8 Kiss
setups) and is a qualified instructor to
certify you. 2009 may be Craig’s final year
in PNG as he has been asked to run an
operation out of Australia, for which he is
designing and building a new boat. However,
we still have a few spaces on 14 night trips
to Eastern Fields in 2009.
It's one NOT to miss!
Owner/captain Paul Baker of the
Telita
completely refitted this boat and despite
her years, she is still one of the most
comfortable & popular of the PNG boats. She
is now equipped with nitrox and all cabins
have en-suite bathrooms & she spends much of
her year in Milne Bay & the south.
The lovely
Tawali Resort
in Milne Bay is the home base for the
Spirit of Niugini,
a new addition to PNG & a super option for
exploring the southern archipelago of PNG.
Tawali is also home to
Chertan
owned and operated by pioneer Rob van der
Loos – probably the most knowledgeable
captain in Milne Bay with the
Chertan
being the best value for a group charters. |
